Core Aeration

De-Thatching

Core aeration is the practice of pulling up small plugs (cores) or soil, thatch, and grass out of the lawn. Over time, the lawn soil can become compacted. This compact soil becomes more difficult for your lawn to thrive in over time. Hard, compact soil is more difficult for grass roots to grow into and it reduces the amount of water, nutrients, and air flow that is able to seep into the soil and get to the roots. This condition is not good for the health of your lawn. Aerating can help to alleviate this problem by decompressing the soil and allowing water, air, and nutrients to flow more freely to the roots. This service should be done at least once per year in order to maintain a healthy lawn.

Overseeding

Overseeding is the practice of applying new grass seed to an existing lawn to fill in thin/bare spots or to simply add new growth to an old and tired lawn. This service should always be coupled with a de-thatching service in order to clear away dead plant material and expose the soil so  new seed has a place to sprout. Overseeding is a great way to bring new life to an old lawn and renew the health of the whole yard. Overseeding should be done to healthy lawns every couple years and to areas where the grass is thin as often as needed.

De-thatching removes excess thatch and dead plant material from the lawn. Over time, a lawn will  naturally create a layer of thatch (dead grass material matted down next to the soil). Some thatch is natural and healthy for the lawn as it helps retain moisture and protects the soil from sunlight. However if too much thatch accumulates, the lawn and soil can become suffocated which can cause the lawn to suffer and thin out. In addition, a thick layer of thatch creates a shield for the soil which makes it almost impossible to plant new grass seed to fill in a tired lawn. The solution to this problem is to use a specialized machine, called a power rake, to dig out most of the old thatch layer while leaving the healthy grass in place. The dead thatch can then be raked up and removed. This service is vital for a lawn with too much dead plan material and should always be done before applying more grass seed to the lawn.
